Could someone explain to me how Israel, a nation whose sovereignty has been sanctioned since 1949 by the UN (as in otherwise UNable, UNwilling, UNthinking, UNintelligable, UNbelievable and a whole lot of other UN’s I can’t think of right now) with resolutions that state that Hezbollah (armed militias) must disarm, has to give in to terrorists who refuse to disarm? It Seems To Me that Israel has the right to defend itself from bloodthirsty terrorists.
“Come now,” you say. “Isn’t bloodthirsty a little harsh?” Let’s look at that closely. When your neighbors have said and continue to say that they will accept nothing less than the annihilation of your entire country and population, what would you call it? Friendly overtures toward peace?
The Israelis have allowed themselves to be sweet talked into ‘cease fire’ agreements numerous times and yet the Hezbollah and Hamas leaders repeatedly break and deny their promises. Where I come from the saying goes “Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice – Shame on me.” It would be nothing, if not just for the Israelis to attempt to destroy those who can not be trusted. Trust is gained through honest and honorable dealings, not firing rockets at those with whom you brokered a “peace accord” only a few years ago.
It may be that “I’m Mad As Hell, And I’m Not Going To Take It Any More” is now the watchword for Israel. They are telling their antagonists, we have drawn a line, and it will not be crossed again without consequences being paid by those who have dared us one time too many. After being backed into a corner over and over, peace at any price is a cost far too great. Appeasement is nothing but surrender. Appeasement weakens the appeaser and empowers the aggressor, i.e. “we got away with it once, let’s try it again.” Appeasement only delays the battles that will ultimately have to be fought. If it is war the terrorists want, and they have told us repeatedly that is exactly what they want, then now is the time to stand and be counted. Lessons of WWII must be taught again.
The Israelis have survived despite numerous grand attempts at extermination by madmen of all stripes. It is time for the United States to redouble our support for one of the few democracies in the Middle East and time for Iran and Syria to be taught that supporting terror will ultimately engender enmity from the rest of the world.
